PBI – Becoming A ‘Brigadista’

The Peace Brigades International (PBI) Guatemala Project is made up of volunteers, from many countries, who have gone through a long and detailed training which covers the situation in Guatemala as well as the work of international accompaniment that PBI has evolved in different countries. Their primaries areas of work include accompaniment, public relations, and publications.

The following are recent examples of the work they carry out in Guatemala:

PBI-Guatemala accompanies the Verapaz Union of Campesina Organizations (UVOC), which represents 367 Indigenous communities, at its Revolution Day activities. The national holiday commemorates the October Revolution of 1944.

PBI-Guatemala accompanies the Peaceful Resistance of La Puya and the Human Rights Law Firm (BDH) at a meeting about a consultation process announced this past June on the tendering of mining projects in the territory.

PBI-Guatemala accompanies Maya Q’eqchi’ defender Bernardo Caal Xol and the Human Rights Law Firm at a court hearing on “improper retention”. Caal says the charge is reprisal for his work defending land, territory and the environment.

PBI-Guatemala accompanies Poqomchi’ territorial defender David Maxena Caal at court hearing. He was charged with “usurpation” in February for his opposition to the Santa Teresa hydroelectric dam.

PBI-Canada, together with PBI-UK, PBI-USA, PBI-Netherlands, and PBI-Mexico, are presenting a webinar, on October 23rd, to generate interest from people around the world to apply to be a brigadista to accompany frontline defenders. It is at 2pm Eastern Time (US and Canada). You can find out more, and register, here.
