‘The ‘Sharpshooter’ Targetting The Leaders Of The Fight Against Corruption In Guatemala’ is the result of an investigation carried out by Guatemala Leaks and CONNECTAS and published, in this instance, on the website of Agencia Ocote. It tells the story of the Fundación Contra el Terrorismo (FCT), a far-right organisation founded by, primarily, military veterans. The leader is not, himself, a former member of the military but the son of one who served in the government of Efraín Ríos Montt.
The investigation places the FCT at the centre of the rollback currently being carried out by the state and the courts, seeking to put an end to the fight against corruption.
It paints a sinister and troubling picture but is, nevertheless, instructive in how the corrupt state, military and business elites have captured the judicial branch to further their own greed and legal immunity from their crimes.
