Divide and rule in the land of gold

We have featured the pain and hardship that has affected the people of San Miguel Ixtahaucán in the Western Highlands as they struggle against the everyday power of global capital. Goldcorp’s Marlin Mine has been the cause of much sorrow through its considerable dame to the environment and to the local communities affected. We published a report from Monsignor Alvaro Ramazzini, Bishop of the Diocese of San Marcos – a powerful rebuttal of the attempts of particular interests to present benefits of the mine to the local community. It is a well worth a read here.

Frauke Decoodt has recently published her piece, Divide and rule in the land of gold, which presents more in the way of community struggle but with a focus of a particular strategy being carried out by Goldcorp and its agents. You can read that here.
