How Guatemala’s ‘War on Drugs’ is being used as a front to clear land for oil companies

We mentioned previously about the Guatemala Government’s subservience to global corporate interests, namely that of French oil company Perenco.

An article by Dawn Paley, published in Briarpatch Magazine, presents a situation in which the interests of the narco-traffickers, and those of the oil-Guatemalan military-oligarchy nexus, are enmeshed in a struggle to control the Petén.

Or are they?

Bearing the brunt of the rising militarisation of the region are, as usual the poor and marginalised of the region who, once more, see themselves being targets of military offensives.
