Did you know that to produce a single gold ring generates 18 tons of toxic waste?
Mega-mining is an chemical extractive industry which impacts all the world’s ecosystems, contaminating the reserves of freshwater, affecting the health of millions of people, and financing serious human rights’ violations.
The mining projects are highly concentrated in a few global companies that control the world mineral market, such that they serve industry as well as financial speculation. These businesses are so powerful that they corrupt governments to the detriment of democracy and social well-being.
Here is a moving animated short film about the impact of mining, Payada pa’ Satán (with thanks to Prensa Comunitaria).
