Guatemala 2021 Human Rights Report

The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, of the U.S. State Department, recently published its 2021 Human Rights Report for Guatemala and it does not make for comfortable reading.

The Executive Summary concludes with:

Impunity continued to be widespread. Corruption, concerted efforts by organized criminal actors, and undermining of anticorruption institutions and the judiciary by corrupt political actors made meaningful investigation and prosecution of crimes, including corruption, involving public officials difficult.

The list of human rights issues is particular long and there seems little will from either the Government or Congress to address them. Their priority being the continued destruction of an independent judiciary.

CACIF, the business and oligarch body, wields an inordinate amount of power in Guatemala, yet continues to remain silent on the myriad abuses carried out against the people of Guatemala. Their silence does, of course, reflect approval of this depressing state of affairs.
