The Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns (OGC) is one of twenty one organisations offering their support to Jorge Santos, director of the Unit for the Protection of Rights Defenders in Guatemala (UDEFEGUA). They state that Guatemala currently faces rampant corruption and attacks on free speech and human rights and that they stand in solidarity with with targeted journalists and human rights defenders, particularly Jorge Santos, with whom Maryknoll missioners and affiliates have worked closely. The Statement calls on the international community to act using all tools at its disposal to correct this injustice.
UDEFEGUA is one of Guatemala’s most prominent human rights organizations and, for the past 23 years, has documented, investigated, and kept statistics on attacks against human rights defenders. These defenders include journalists, judges, lawyers, community leaders, Indigenous, environmental and land defenders, and others working to defend rights.
The Statement is in both English and Spanish and you can read it, including the list of signatories, here, Statement Supporting UDEFEGUA Director Jorge Santos.
