GHRC – Attacks on human rights defenders continue in Guatemala

GHRC writes that in the past month attacks on human rights defenders, including journalists, have continued.

Journalist Carlos Choc has suffered acts of intimidation and has been the victim of a defamation campaign. These acts are believed to be linked to his coverage of evictions, the cancellation of mining contracts in Izabal, and the criminalization of Indigenous leaders.

The threatening incidents began on September 10, when an unidentified vehicle hit the fence surrounding Carlos Choc’s house in El Estor, Izabal. Later that night, shots were fired into the air about a block from his house. Shots have been fired nearby on two or three other occasions since then. Neighbors have reported seeing unidentified armed men on motorcycles and strange cars driving through the community. Choc also received a strange call from a man who asked him about a supposed property in Choc’s name in Livingston, Izabal. According to Choc, these recent attacks are meant to intimidate him and the community opposed to mining.
