The Winter edition of El Quetzal, from The Guatemala Human Rights Commission (GHRC), has recently been published. It features the leadership of Guatemala’s Indigenous in the struggle to defend democracy with pieces by Marta Estela Gutiérrez Montúfar and Isabel Solis.
GHRC also noted that the Inter-American Court (CIDH) ruled that the Guatemalan government violated the rights of the Indigenous Q’eqchi’ people to property and consultation by permitting mining on land in El Estor, Izabal and ordering an immediate stop to all mining activities.
Also from GHRC, Judge Miguel Angel Galvez was awarded the Alice Zachmann Human Rights Defenders Award.
