Earlier this year, La Puya celebrated its 13th anniversary as a Comunidad en Resistencia in oppostion to the imposition of a gold mine on its territory.
Derik Mazariegos posted an article on the celebrations in Prensa Comunitaria.
On March 2, 2025, as they have every year for thirteen years, the communities of San José del Golfo and San Pedro Ayampuc gathered again in La Puya. It was not a festive commemoration, but rather a space to reaffirm their resistance. The threat of mining is still present, the attempts of imposition have not ceased, and the communities continue to organise to defend their territory.
For thirteen years, La Puya has symbolized an unwavering resistance against mining. Despite the repression and exhaustion, the communities continue to defend their territory, their water, and their right to decide.
You can read the original, in Spanish, here, A 13 años de resistencia contra la minería, La Puya reafirma su compromiso en defensa del territorio, and any errors in translation are mine.
‘La Puya’: The Rhythm of Resistance, in GSN, provides some background and a reflection on the first anniversary of the blockade and there are more links from the 10th anniversary, here, ‘La Puya’: Ten Years Of Resistance, The Rhythm Continues.
Like others, GSN congratulates La Comunidad en Resistencia for 13 years of commitment to defending their territories and we stand in solidarity with their non-violent struggle.
