The latest edition of El Quetzal, the newsletter from Guatemala Human Rights Commission (GHRC) is now available.
The focus, of course, is on the unfolding events that led to the resignation and arrest of President Otto Pérez Molina and the corruption scandal that has engulfed his administration since mid-April, the subsequent political upheaval, and what may be in store for the future given this Sunday’s general elections.
The corruption scandals have linked not only high-level public officials, but also all major political parties to corruption and other illicit activities. In this context, a growing number of citizens have called for the postponement of the general elections — set for September 6 — until meaningful reforms are carried out.
Also included is a piece about how women are leading the search for justice in Guatemala and an analysis of the “Alliance for Prosperity Plan” for Central America.
